We support the communities we serve in a number of different ways.

We encourage our employees to support community and charitable organisations through our employee volunteering scheme Just an hour. This scheme allows employees to give a minimum of 15 hours every year to support causes close to their hearts.

 

Our employees often find opportunities through Just an hour allow them to learn new skills and can increase their confidence so they also benefit. Some departments use Just an hour for team building.

Healthworks
Healthworks was set up to improve health and well-being, and reduce the gap in quality of health in Easington Colliery.

 

By providing access to local health services, Healthworks continue to work towards.

StepChange
We recognise that sometimes life’s ups and downs mean that some customers may find themselves in challenging financial situations. Whilst water bills are a comparatively small part of total household costs, we are determined to do everything it can to help our customers.

 

In 2014, we teamed up with StepChange Debt Charity, in a first for the water industry, to create a partnership to offer customers access to free, confidential debt advice and support.

 

We know talking about money is difficult for some, so we've partnered with StepChange Debt Charity.

 

This is the first partnership between a debt charity and a utility company, and allows us to recommend StepChange to our customers, confident they can get the support and advice they need.

 

We can refer a customer to StepChange, or simply pass the contact details along. We also promote StepChange through our website and other communications, so our customers know help is there for them.

WaterAid
Around the world, 1 in 10 people don’t have clean water close to home. And 1 in 4 don’t have a decent toilet of their own.

Northumbrian Water partners with WaterAid, an international organisation that works to provide access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene.


We've promised to raise £1 million for WaterAid, and we plan to achieve that sum through charity events, donations and fundraisers.


Louise Hunter, Northumbrian WaterAid's chair, said: "4,000 children die every year in Madagascar from diarrhoea caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. This is totally unacceptable in this day and age, and we're determined to do something about it."


"WaterAid doesn't only provide taps and toilets. It enables children to go to school, they don't have to walk miles to collect water they know will make them ill. It helps communities grow, empowering them and building their skills. It gives people hope, a future."
